Call for Proposals: Barriers to Feminist Economists & Feminist Economics Ideas

IAFFE is commissioning background review papers to better understand the barriers that feminist economists face in their careers and the barriers that feminist economic ideas face within the economics discipline as a whole.

Barriers to Feminist Economists

IAFFE is commissioning a background review paper to better understand barriers that feminist economists face in their careers.

The paper will review the barriers faced by feminist economists in academia and professional practice, analyzing challenges across multiple dimensions, including but not limited to: Representation in the field, Training and educational pathways, Professional culture within economics, Mentorship opportunities, Network development and professional relationships, Publication processes, Career advancement trajectories, Methodological acceptance and constraints.

While focusing specifically on feminist economists, proposals should incorporate relevant literature on women's broader experiences in the economics profession. Submissions must include perspectives from the Global South. Given the limited existing research, we strongly encourage primary data collection (e.g., surveys or interviews with IAFFE members) to supplement literature review. Papers should conclude with concrete recommendations for how IAFFE can better support feminist economists in addressing these professional challenges.

Barriers to Feminist Economic Ideas

IAFFE is commissioning a background review paper to better understand barriers that feminist economic ideas face within the economics discipline as a whole. This paper will identify and analyze feminist economic ideas – when they are marginalized, the barriers that prevent broad acceptance, and when they break through and become more “mainstreamed.” For example, feminist ideas about the care economy, unpaid work, and social reproduction were once on the margins of economic thinking – now they are taken more seriously. How did this happen? Various approaches could be adopted: the paper could be developed as a series of case studies, it could be written as a history of feminist thought within economics, it could focus on specific policy struggles, among other possibilities. The paper should be international in scope and carefully consider feminist economic thinking in the Global South. The paper would also make explicit recommendations for strategies that IAFFE could adopt to help make feminist ideas more impactful in economics and economic policy.
